Sedation Dentistry

Affecting as many as 15% of the U.S. population, dental anxiety or phobia is a real condition that can have a severely detrimental effect on the oral and general health of the sufferer. This is because failing to identify potential dental problems early can lead to them and their symptoms becoming much worse.

If you are suffering from a dental infection, the bacteria could eventually access the bloodstream, traveling through it until they infect the major organs. Other side effects of serious dental problems include pain, tooth loss, and deterioration of the jawbone. Studies have also shown links between poor oral health and medical diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Thankfully, there is a solution for dental anxiety, known as sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry refers to the use of medications to calm and relax a patient, so that anything from a regular dental check-up to invasive treatment is possible. It has also been successful in enabling treatment in patients who have physical or mental impairments that usually prevent them from being able to tolerate dental procedures.

Side Effects from Sedation

The stronger the sedation, the greater the number of side effects that you may experience, and the greater their intensity may be. The may include:

  • Disorientation
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you are concerned about any of the side effects that you are experiencing in the hours after your procedure, contact us as soon as possible.

If your heart starts racing when you think about visiting your dentist, or you are avoiding your regularly scheduled check-ups, we would be delighted to help you. Our comprehensive sedation dentistry services can help even the most anxious patient enjoy excellent dental health. Call Vero Dental Spa today to arrange a consultation appointment.

Types of Dental Sedation

Sedation comes in several forms and is dependent on several factors. These are usually:

  • The extent of your anxiety or phobia
  • The type of dental procedure you require
  • Your medical history (to ensure that the drugs used in the sedation are suitable for you)

Which sedation is right for you will be discussed at your consultation appointment.

Light Sedation

Light sedation is normally offered in the form of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. A mask is placed over your nose during the procedure, and the gas that you inhale will relax you. The effects of this type of sedation wear off virtually as soon as you stop inhaling the gas, so you should feel completely normal after your procedure.

Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation requires the patient to take a pill that contains sedative medication which is normally swallowed an hour or so ahead of your procedure. The drug induces a considerably deeper state of relaxation, and you will probably have little recollection of the treatment. You will also need a friend or family member to drive you home after.

Deep Sedation

Deep sedation is normally reserved for patients with extreme anxiety and longer, more complex dental procedures. It is administered intravenously, and will put patients on the verge of unconsciousness. You will have no awareness during the procedure, and no memory of it after. Again, you will need someone to drive you home after the procedure as you may feel dizzy or disoriented for some time after.

If you have missing or severely damaged teeth, then you…

If you have missing or severely damaged teeth, then you may think about getting dental implants. Although one of the most popular solutions for a smile makeover, dental implants can also help to restore the function of your teeth so that you can enjoy eating, drinking, speaking, and laughing without having to spare a second thought about your teeth. In order for dental implants to be fitted properly, preliminary dental appointments and the actual treatment process will need to take place. If you are one of the 9-15% of people in the U.S. that suffer from severe anxiety or phobia about visiting the dentist, then dental implants may seem like an impossible dream. However, with sedation dentistry even the most nervous of patients can enjoy the unique benefits of high quality dental implants. What is Sedation Dentistry? Many people believe…
