What Exactly Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain applied over the top of your teeth to give them a whiter, brighter, and more aesthetically pleasing appearance. They can also provide an additional layer of strength, which is beneficial if your teeth are thin or have weak enamel. One of the biggest benefits of veneers is that they’re resistant to stains formed from smoking or drinking red wine. This makes them a long-lasting solution for a beautiful smile.

However, veneers are also a permanent treatment. The application requires a slight removal of your tooth’s enamel. While you can remove your porcelain veneers in the future, your natural teeth underneath will no longer be in their original condition.

Why Porcelain Veneers?

The most popular type of veneer is the porcelain material. This is because they’re successfully used to improve the appearance of the teeth in various situations, including:

• To hide teeth that are fractured, broken, chipped, or damaged
• To eliminate gaps between teeth
• To level the thickness of teeth and give them a uniform appearance
• In cases where teeth whitening or bleaching has been unsuccessful, veneers can provide the pearly white finish that a patient may desire

Porcelain laminate veneers are created using multiple ultra-thin ceramic layers, which are applied using a special dental adhesive.

Before the application, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area we’ll be working on. To apply and fix the veneer, we must remove around 1mm of the existing tooth to ensure a perfect fit. This will give your teeth a completely natural and uniform appearance.

It’s crucial to get the bonding process right, as it will secure the veneer in place while allowing it to function like a normal tooth. We’ll place a light-sensitive resin between the original tooth and the new veneer, and then we’ll harden it by using a special laser. Your new veneer is now firmly secured in place!

Instant Veneers

Instant veneers provide an alternative to the lengthy filing and bonding process. Rather, these appliances are secured directly over the top of your teeth.

This type of veneer application is significantly quicker and causes less discomfort. However, it’s not a viable option for all patients, particularly those with poor teeth. Vero Dental Spa will advise you on which is the best choice for your requirements.

Looking After Your Veneers

You may find that you have some sensitivity to extreme temperatures for up to a week after your treatment. This is normal and due to the enamel removal for the successful fit. Approximately seven days after your procedure, we will ask to see you for a follow-up appointment. During this time, we will assess how well the veneers are placed and functioning for you.

Although veneers are relatively strong, they still require proper care and attention. You should continue practicing an excellent oral hygiene routine and brush with a non-abrasive toothpaste specially formulated for veneers. The porcelain is rather brittle, so avoid biting your fingernails or opening beer bottles with your teeth. Activities like these could cause irreparable damage to the veneers. Finally, if you regularly clench or grind your teeth, we suggest using a bite guard to protect your veneers from premature damage.
