Porcelain Dental Crowns in Vero Beach, FL

Achieve a Beautiful Smile

porcelain crowns

Two of the most common dental issues we see at our office in Vero Beach are decay and deterioration. If we can identify these problems early enough and treat them with custom porcelain crowns, it can limit how much costly and extensive dental work you’ll need in the future.

At Vero Dental Spa, our cosmetic approach to porcelain crowns goes beyond coverage; it’s about crafting a crown that looks like the best version of your natural tooth. Whether you’re refreshing a single tooth or building toward a complete smile transformation, every crown is designed with your appearance as the top priority.

  • Decay and minor damage are two of the most common problems treated at Vero Dental Spa. Both of these issues can cause several symptoms, including sensitivity and pain. Identifying and treating the cause as quickly as possible will prevent the symptoms from worsening. Porcelain crowns are one of the principal treatments for this type of damage, and our experienced team is pleased to offer an exemplary standard of care to those who need one.

  • What Are Porcelain Crowns?

Porcelain crowns are a restorative or cosmetic treatment choice for mild to moderately decayed or damaged teeth. These tooth-shaped caps sit on top of the affected tooth, encasing it fully inside and hiding damage. In the case of broken or cracked teeth, crowns will hold them together.

While crowns have been around for a long time, patients have only recently begun choosing the porcelain material for treatment. This is because, unlike metal, porcelain can be created in various shades, enabling patients to pick a color that closely resembles their natural teeth. When the crown is put in place, it blends perfectly with the rest of the patient’s smile and offers the ultimate discretion.

  • What Dental Problems Can Porcelain Crowns Correct?

Porcelain crowns are a successful solution for a range of different dental problems, including teeth that:

    • Are moderately to severely decayed
    • Have eroded (often due to acid erosion caused by GERD or bruxism)
    • Are cracked and need to be held together
    • Are so weak that there is a risk of breaking
    • Are severely misshaped or noticeably different in size from your others
    • Are severely discolored as a result of trauma

During your appointment, our dentists will perform a thorough examination of your teeth (while going over your dental history) to determine if a porcelain crown is the best treatment for your problem.

How Are Porcelain Crowns Fitted?

The process to fit porcelain crowns requires two visits to our offices. The procedure is straightforward and always performed using a local anesthetic – meaning you shouldn’t experience any pain during the process! If you suffer from dental anxiety, it may be possible for you to be sedated. Our dentists are highly understanding of patients with this concern, so please be sure to inquire about sedation options during your consultation.

  • First Visit

During your first visit, we’ll prepare the affected tooth for the crown by filing it down for a perfect fit. All porcelain crowns are designed to a specification to ensure that they’re strong enough to withstand daily use but still have a natural-looking translucency. If you do not have enough natural tooth left to support the crown, your dentist may build it up using a special resin.

In addition to this, he will also remove any decay so the underlying tooth can be as healthy as possible before placing the permanent crown.

After your tooth has been prepared, we will take molds of your teeth. This will be used to create your custom-designed porcelain crown. We’ll also work with you to determine which shade will provide the closest match for your natural teeth.

Finally, you’ll be given a temporary crown, which you will wear until the final one is ready. This will only be secured with semi-permanent adhesive, so please avoid sticky or chewy foods that could pull the crown loose.

  • Second Visit

Around a week later, you will return to our office to have your new, permanent crown fitted. After removing your temporary cap, we will assess the color and fit of your final, permanent one before cementing it in place.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Porcelain Crowns?

woman smiling at the dentist

You may be a great candidate if you have a tooth that is:

  • Severely discolored and unresponsive to professional teeth whitening
  • Misshapen, abnormally small, or disproportionate to neighboring teeth
  • Heavily worn from grinding (bruxism) or acid erosion, changing your smile’s overall appearance
  • Chipped or cracked in a way that affects how your smile looks, even if the tooth is otherwise structurally sound
  • Part of a cosmetic bridge intended to restore a gap for aesthetic reasons
  • A component of a planned smile makeover requiring reshaping or color correction

Not sure whether a crown or porcelain veneers are the better fit? During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Royal will compare both options and recommend what achieves the best aesthetic outcome for your tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How natural will my crown look?

Full porcelain crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth when crafted with cosmetic intent. The material’s translucency, the custom shade matching, and Dr. Royal’s attention to shape and proportion all ensure the crown complements, not competes with, your natural smile.

  • How long will a cosmetic porcelain crown last?

With proper oral hygiene and regular checkups, porcelain crowns typically last 10 to 20 years. Avoiding habits like ice-chewing or nail-biting, and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth, will help maximize that lifespan.
