Dental Implants FAQs

What are dental implants?

Extracted Teeth

Dental implants are the latest method of replacing missing or extracted teeth. They’re made of three key components:

  • An anchor, which looks like a screw and is inserted into the jawbone
  • A crown, which acts as the replacement tooth
  • The abutment, which secures the two together.

How does the anchor stay in place?

The titanium anchor is extremely tough and durable. Once we insert the implant into your jaw, a process called osseointegration takes place. This is where the bone surrounding the implant begins to fuse to it, strengthening it even further. The replacement tooth is then fitted once this happens, but your new implant will be as secure as a regular tooth once it’s in place.

  • Will my implant be noticeable?

One of the biggest reasons people choose implants is their subtlety. The visible part of your implant (the replacement tooth) is color-matched to be the same as the rest of your teeth. It’s also a permanent fixture, so there’s no need for removable dentures anymore. You can eat and drink as normal, and no one will know you have a dental implant unless you tell them.

  • How successful is the procedure?

Dental implants have the highest success rate of any implanted surgical device at around 98%. However, a robust oral hygiene routine is crucial to ensuring their results in the long term.

  • Will it hurt?

For many people, the idea of having a metal screw inserted into their jaw is absolutely terrifying. However, anesthesia is used during the procedure to prevent you from feeling any pain. Some swelling and soreness are common, but they usually dissipate by the next day. Over-the-counter pain relief usually is sufficient to alleviate any discomfort you may feel.

  • If I have more than one missing tooth, can I still have implants?

If you have a single tooth missing, you will need an implant to support it. However, if you have multiple teeth missing, it’s often possible for two or more implants to support more than one tooth each. This is often known as an implant-supported bridge, and your dentist will advise you if this is a viable option for your dental requirements.

  • How long does the treatment take?

The length of the treatment depends on the extent of the work you need, but you can expect to make several visits to Vero Dental Spa over six months. Your doctor can give you a more accurate treatment timeline based on your dental requirements.

  • Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?

Although dental implants have a high success rate, it doesn’t mean they’re suitable for everyone. If you’re considering this treatment option, you will need to consult with your doctor, who will assess your candidacy based on your health and dental requirements. The ideal candidate will:

    • Have great general and oral health
    • Have sufficient bone in their jaw to support the implant
    • Have healthy gums
    • Be committed to taking good care of their teeth and gums
    • People who may not be suitable candidates for implants include:

    • Heavy smokers
    • Pregnant women
    • Young people whose jawbones are still developing
    • Those with immune conditions
    • Those with uncontrolled diabetes
    • Alcohol or substance abusers
    • People who have received a high dose of radiation to the head or neck (i.e., radiotherapy for cancer)
    • People with hemophilia
    • People who have a suppressed immune system
  • How much do dental implants cost?

Dental implants are created to fit the patient’s specific requirements, so there’s no “one-size-fits-all” cost. While they may seem like an expensive option at first, they’re usually more cost-effective and reliable in the long run.

You may find that your dental insurance covers part of the cost of your treatment, or you may be able to get additional coverage. We highly recommend speaking with your dental insurance provider to see what your options are. Alternatively, many dentists can offer payment plans through third-party providers.
